From PADI Instructor to Tec Instructor
Technical diving can become an important next step in your professional development as a PADI Instructor. Through our close connection with Savedra Dive Center, a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center in Moalboal, we can support instructors at different stages of their professional diving careers.
Savedra specializes in PADI Instructor Development Courses (IDC) and recreational instructor development, while our Tec team provides the pathway into PADI Tec Instructor training.
Becoming a Tec Instructor is not an automatic continuation of the IDC. Candidates must meet the specific technical diving certifications, logged experience and professional prerequisites for their intended Tec Instructor level. If you are not yet qualified as a technical diver, we can help you plan the necessary PADI Tec Diver training before progressing to Tec Instructor development.
For instructors who want to develop in this direction, Moalboal offers a particularly interesting combination: professional instructor development through Savedra and technical diver and instructor development through our Tec program.

PADI Tec 40 Instructor
The PADI Tec 40 Instructor rating is the first step into teaching PADI open-circuit technical diving.
The training develops your ability to teach technical diving rather than simply perform technical diving skills yourself. You will work on instructional techniques, evaluating diver performance, supervising technical training and applying PADI TecRec standards in a teaching environment.
Once qualified as a PADI Tec 40 Instructor, you can conduct Discover Tec and teach PADI Tec Basics and Tec 40 Diver.
Course Requirements
To enroll in the PADI Tec 40 Instructor course, the following prerequisites are listed:
- PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor or higher
- PADI Enriched Air Diver Specialty Instructor
- PADI Deep Diver Specialty Instructor
- PADI Tec 45 Diver
- At least 25 EANx dives deeper than 30 m / 100 ft
- At least 10 decompression dives using full technical equipment
Before applying for the PADI Tec 40 Instructor rating, candidates must also meet the following requirements:
- Have certified at least 25 divers.
- Have completed a minimum of 20 decompression dives.
Important: Of the 25 diver certifications, no more than five may come from courses without dives, and no more than five from PADI Seal Team or Master Seal Team registrations.
Qualification Pathway
To qualify for the PADI Tec 40 Instructor rating, candidates must meet all applicable prerequisites and experience requirements and complete one of the following pathways:
- Successfully complete a PADI Tec 40 Instructor course.
- Hold a qualifying technical diving instructor rating from another training organization, have assisted with one Tec 40 Diver course or taught two qualifying courses (subject to PADI verification), and successfully complete the PADI Tec 40 Instructor Exam within 12 months of application.

PADI Tec 45 Instructor
The PADI Tec 45 Instructor rating is the next step in your development as a technical diving instructor and expands the range of PADI Tec courses you can teach.
The training further develops your ability to teach and evaluate technical diving skills, manage more advanced training dives and apply PADI TecRec standards at the Tec 45 level.
Once qualified as a PADI Tec 45 Instructor, you can conduct Discover Tec and teach PADI Tec Basics, Tec 40 and Tec 45 Diver.
Course Requirements
To enroll in the PADI Tec 45 Instructor course, candidates must meet the following prerequisite:
- PADI Tec 40 Instructor
Before Applying for the Rating
Before applying for the PADI Tec 45 Instructor rating, candidates must have completed at least 150 logged dives, including a minimum of 20 decompression dives deeper than 30 m / 100 ft.
Qualification Pathway
To qualify for the PADI Tec 45 Instructor rating, candidates must meet all applicable prerequisites and experience requirements and complete one of the following pathways:
- Successfully complete a PADI Tec 45 Instructor course.
- Hold a qualifying technical diving instructor rating from another training organization and meet PADI’s additional requirements, including relevant Tec 40 and Tec 45 teaching experience and successful completion of the PADI Tec 45 Instructor Exam within 12 months of application.
Eligibility for the alternative qualification pathway is subject to PADI verification.

PADI Tec 50 Instructor
The PADI Tec 50 Instructor rating is the highest level in the open-circuit Tec Instructor progression that we offer and qualifies experienced technical instructors to teach through the PADI Tec 50 level.
The training develops the instructional skills needed to teach advanced technical diving, including evaluating diver performance, supervising decompression training and managing the additional complexity involved in Tec 50-level training.
Once qualified as a PADI Tec 50 Instructor, you can conduct Discover Tec and teach PADI Tec Basics, Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50 Diver.
Course Requirements
To enroll in the PADI Tec 50 Instructor course, candidates must meet the following prerequisites:
- PADI Tec 45 Instructor
- PADI Tec 50 Diver

Before applying for the PADI Tec 50 Instructor rating, candidates must have completed at least 250 logged dives, including a minimum of 25 decompression dives deeper than 40 m / 130 ft.
Qualification Pathway
To qualify for the PADI Tec 50 Instructor rating, candidates must meet all applicable prerequisites and experience requirements and complete one of the following pathways:
- Successfully complete a PADI Tec 50 Instructor course.
- Hold a qualifying technical diving instructor rating from another training organization and meet PADI’s additional requirements, including relevant Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50 teaching experience and successful completion of the PADI Tec 50 Instructor Exam within 12 months of application.

Our Tec Instructor training is led by Oscar “Tio” Picó Gras, PADI Tec 50 Instructor Trainer and an experienced technical diving educator based in Moalboal.
Oscar has been a PADI Master Instructor since 2016 and has extensive experience teaching both recreational and technical divers. His technical teaching background includes Tec Sidemount, Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50, together with experience as a TDI technical diving instructor.
Oscar has extensive experience training technical divers through both PADI TecRec and TDI programs, giving him a broad perspective on technical diving education and instructor development. His additional qualifications in gas blending, oxygen-service equipment, valve servicing and tank inspection also give him practical experience beyond technical diving instruction.
As a Tec 50 Instructor Trainer, Oscar can work with qualified PADI Instructors who want to progress through the Tec Instructor pathway, combining instructor development with practical technical diving experience in Moalboal.

Training and Equipment
PADI Tec Instructor training combines technical diving proficiency with instructional development. You will work with the equipment configurations, dive planning procedures, gas management and instructional techniques appropriate to the Tec Instructor level you are preparing to teach.
Training may involve backmount doubles or technical sidemount configurations, together with the required decompression cylinders and equipment. If you plan to bring your own technical diving equipment, please provide details before arrival so we can review its suitability and discuss any additional equipment requirements.
